Geovany Soto is heading to the Disabled List with a torn meniscus in his left knee, according to the Chicago Cubs.

Chicago Cubs catcher Geovany Soto is in the middle of a miserable season, hitting just .161/.250/.301 in 93 at-bats. His last season was something of a disappointment compared to his stellar 2010, but that wasn't anything compared to this season.

But there might be extenuating circumstances. From Paul Sullivan:

I'm no biomechanical expert, but I'd wager that a problem with Soto's left knee (where the tear is) would affect his swing. And if it doesn't? I'd blame it anyway. Heck, if I were a hitter, I'd blame my bad stats on acne if people bought it.

Regardless, Soto was originally said to be available for Friday's game, but it's hard to see a situation where that would be worth the risk of running him out there again. Welington Castillo is the Cubs' backup catcher, and Steve Clevenger is the other listed catcher on the 40-man roster, but he's already on the 15-day DL. Another roster move to add a backup catcher to the 25-man roster is likely coming.
