Earlier on Friday, it was reported that umpire Bob Davidson was going to be suspended for a game because of his on-field actions during the May 15 game between the Phillies and Astros. Hooray! Oversight and discipline of a jerk umpire! Except, it couldn't stop there. From an MLB press release:
Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel has received a one-game suspension stemming from the on-field incident in the top of the eighth inning of Philadelphia’s Tuesday, May 15th game against the Houston Astros at Citizens Bank Park. Joe Garagiola, Jr., Senior Vice President of Standards & On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, made the announcement.Manuel’s suspension is to be served tonight, when the Phillies are to host the Boston Red Sox.
Manuel used naughty words too, I guess. But he's the manager. He's supposed to. And if he says the wrong ones, he gets kicked out of the game. Which happened. So I'm not sure what he did that was so egregious that it merits a suspension where 99 percent of the ejections in baseball this year will not. The press release didn't specify.
But if an umpire is suspended, I guess there has to be a bone thrown to the umpires' union. Charlie Manuel is that bone.
