In the Friday afternoon interleague match-up between the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko was hit in the face by an errant Jeff Samardzija pitch. After being checked out by trainers briefly, a bloody Konerko walked off the field on his own power.

The pitch was an 85-m.p.h. splitter according to GameDay:

The ball sounded as if it hit off Konerko's helmet before it made contact with his head, so it might have been a glancing blow. That probably doesn't make Konerko feel better right now, but it was almost certainly a lucky break.

After being hit, Konerko dropped to the ground, but got up quickly, never losing consciousness. Samardzija hovered around home plate with concern, but Konerko wasn't down for long, getting up with a towel held to his face to staunch the flow of blood:

After the White Sox' trainer offered to help him off the field, Konerko pushed him away and walked into the clubhouse on his own.
