Brandon McCarthy is headed to the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder.
Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy has been placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 18 with a strained right shoulder, the Athletics announced Sunday on Twitter. Jim Miller will be called up from Triple-A Sacramento to replace him.
McCarthy may have been injured catching an Elvis Andrus bunt May 18 that was eventually ruled a drop, thwarting an inning-ending double play in that game. The call by umpire Laz Diaz prompted McCarthy to swear at him, and our A's blog, Athletics Nation, to ruminate on the role of an umpire. McCarthy later wrote in his personal blog that he regretted his actions, writing, "In the future, I think I’m going to start going for the much calmer discussion/debates."
McCarthy, the opening-day starter for the A's, is 3-3 with a 2.95 ERA in nine starts in 2012.
