The San Diego Padres sent reliever Ernesto Frieri to the Los Angeles Angels for two prospects.
The San Diego Padres grow live-armed relievers in a petri dish and ship them out for prospects, so it's no surprise to see news like this come across the wire:
Angels have acquired Ernesto Frieri from San Diego in exchange for INF Alexi Amarista and RHP Donn Roach
Frieri is a 26-year-old right-hander who has appeared in 105 game for the Padres over parts of the last four seasons. His first full year in the majors was 2011, when he finished with a 2.71 ERA and a 76/34 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 63 innings. He was off to a fantastic start this year, too, with 18 strikeouts in just 11⅔ innings.
Alexi Amarista is a 24-year-old middle infielder who has appeared in 24 games for the Angels in the majors. He's a career .313/.370/.441 hitter in the minors, though most of that damage was done in rookie leagues.
Donn Roach would appear to be the centerpiece of the deal from the Padres' perspective, as he's a 22-year-old right-handed pitcher. In six starts in the Cal League this year, he's walked three in 41⅔ innings, so you can guess why the Padres were smitten.
