The Atlanta Braves demoted their Opening Day shortstop, Tyler Pastornicky.
The offseason of inactivity the Atlanta Braves enjoyed over the winter months was impressive. They didn't make a single move. They re-signed Jack Wilson, I think. That was the biggest move. They were so confident in their in-house options, they kicked back and took the winter off.
One of those in-house options was rookie shortstop Tyler Pastornicky. Despite a spotty record of minor-league success, Pastornicky was the starting shortstop for the Braves to begin the season. That lasted two months. From the Associated Press:
The Atlanta Braves have optioned rookie shortstop Tyler Pastornicky to Triple-A Gwinnett, announcing the move following Wednesday night's 10-7 win over St. Louis.
Andrelton Simmons, who is hitting .292 at Double-A Mississippi, was called up and is expected to take over the starting job.
Pastornicky hit .241/.281/.324 over 145 at-bats this season, but what likely sealed his demotion was his inconsistent fielding and seven errors. The 22-year-old Simmons was hitting .292/.372/.421 in Double-A, with a 20/20 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 171 at-bats.
