Brewers' Alex Gonzalez Has Torn ACL

Stay connected for news and updates

Torn ACLs appear to be quite the trend these days, beginning with the Chicago BullsDerrick Rose in the NBA and the New York YankeesMariano Rivera.

The Milwaukee BrewersAlex Gonzalez left Saturday’s game with a knee injury after a hard slide, and an MRI confirmed the bad news:

Rose is having surgery and so is Rivera, so it doesn’t seem likely that Gonzalez will avoid it. It’s not clear who will replace Gonzalez on a full-time basis — you’d think the Brewers would want someone better than Cesar Izturis — but it won’t be Craig Counsell:

Alex Gonzalez had barely made it off the field Saturday after suffering an apparently serious right knee injury before the Craig Counsell questions started rolling in. Might the popular Counsell come out of retirement to help the Brewers get through their wave of medical maladies?

Counsell said the thought crossed his mind, but the answer for now is no.

“I don’t have plans to play,” he said.

Too bad. That would have been fun.
