Just as Cubs starting pitcher Ryan Dempster's trade value was soaring, he's come down with lat discomfort. Textbook Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs are terrible and looking to sell pieces for younger pieces. Ryan Dempster is a movable piece, and Friday, he blanked the Red Sox for seven innings. In his start before that, Dempster blanked the Twins for eight innings. In his start before that, Dempster blanked the Brewers for seven innings. Dempster owns a 2.11 ERA with three strikeouts per walk, and Sunday there was talk that he could be traded to a contender within the next two weeks.

About that.

Better for the Cubs that Dempster has lat tightness instead of, say, shoulder tightness, or elbow tightness. But while this injury could conceivably have come at a worse time, it does still come at a very bad time, as far as Dempster's trade value is concerned. In any move, he's now likely to bring less back than he would have otherwise, either because he'll get moved later in the season, because other teams will be more wary, or both.

The Cubs probably weren't going to hit a home run by trading Dempster anyway, but this hurts. There is not yet a timetable for Dempster's return.
