Penny pitched for the Giants in 2009. And now, he will pitch for them again.

Let's get the bad joke out of the way right now, before anything gets in its way.

Like a Brad Penny, he keeps coming back...

Penny has had quite the odyssey since he last pitched in a major-league game, which was 1⅔ innings of horrific relief for the Tigers in Game 6 of the 2011 ALCS. He signed to play for the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks in Japan, but was released after one start there, which was also horrendous (seven hits and six runs in 3⅓ innings).

Nevertheless, the San Francisco Giants signed him to a minor-league deal on May 18. He's made seven not-so-great relief appearances for Triple-A Fresno (5.40 ERA, 1.44 WHIP), but now he's back in the major leagues, and will be in the Giants' bullpen beginning with Friday night's game against the Reds.

Like a Brad Penny... oh, sorry.
