According to one of the Diamondbacks' managing partner, shortstop Stephen Drew should have returned from his ankle injury already.
Stephen Drew hasn't played since July 20 of last season, when he fractured his right ankle sliding into home plate. Since then, the Arizona Diamondbacks have made do with Willie Bloomquist and John McDonald, and they've waited patiently for Drew's return.
Then they figured that waiting patiently was for suckers and lashed out at Drew. From Pros2Preps, via SB Nation Arizona, here's managing partner Ken Kendrick on Stephen Drew:
"I'm going to be real direct about Stephen (Drew)," Kendrick said, "I believe Stephen should have been out there playing before now. Frankly, I for one am disappointed. I'm going to be real candid and say I think Stephen and his representatives are more focused on where Stephen's going to be a year from now than going out and supporting the team that's paying his salary
Those are some pointed and unusually candid words from an owner. Drew and the Diamondbacks have a $13 million option after the 2012 season that is not likely to be exercised, so it's likely that Drew will be a free agent following the season. According to Kendrick, that pending free agency is Drew's current focus during his continued rehabilitation.
