The Detroit Tigers are underperforming in a serious way in the AL Central. One of the reasons is that they've dealt with injuries. Another reason is that they've scored fewer runs than the league average -- just below the Mariners. Now they can deal with something that affects both! From MLive.com:
Avila left in the fifth inning Tuesday after re-aggravating his right hamstring and it appears the 25-year-old All-Star will now require a stint on the 15-day disabled list.
"We found out it was probably a mistake on my part," Leyland said after the team’s 4-2 loss to Cleveland. "If you want to blame somebody, you can blame me for that."
The Tigers have reportedly called up AAA catcher Bryan Holaday to replace Avila on the active roster.
Avila is having a fine year for a catcher, hitting .250/.338/.429, but he's hitting far less than he did last year, when he had one of the better offensive seasons by a catcher in recent memory.
