The Oakland Athletics have DFA'd Kila Ka'aihue to make roster room for Brandon Moss, who they hope will help cure a miserable offense.
The Oakland Athletics have barely hit this season, as the team owns a current .630 OPS and 75 OPS+. There was once a time one might've thought Kila Ka'aihue could've helped to cure such troubles. The A's front office feels the exact opposite.
Over 139 trips to the plate this year, Ka'aihue has posted a .693 OPS. He just homered on Monday, but on Wednesday, we get this news from Jane Lee:
Kila Ka’aihue, who I prematurely assumed was headed to the paternity leave list, has been designated for assignment to clear a 40-man roster spot. The A’s now have 10 days to trade, release or pass him through waivers.
"Congratulations, Kila Ka'aihue, your wife is about to have twins! You are no longer on our roster so please get out of here."
Ka'aihue is making room for 28-year-old outfielder Brandon Moss, who owns a career .682 OPS in the majors, but who's hit the crap out of the ball this year in triple-A. Moss is apparently going to play first base. Ka'aihue could very easily clear waivers and remain with the A's organization, but he could also end up with someone else. Perhaps ... the Twins? Get it?
