Derek Holland is going to the 15-day disabled list with shoulder fatigue, and prospect Tanner Scheppers is being called up by the Texas Rangers.
Derek Holland has had a rough couple of weeks. First he lost almost 20 pounds because of a nasty stomach virus, he's given up 18 earned runs in his last 19 innings, and now he's on the 15-day DL.
From Jeff Wilson:
Derek Holland to the DL with left shoulder fatigues. Tanner Scheppers coming up.
A stomach virus isn't pleasant, but it usually passes*. Shoulder fatigue, though, is scary stuff. Holland's velocity in his last start was two miles off what it was at the beginning of the year. That could be explained by the virus and loss of weight, but any time the word "shoulder" is used, it's okay to get just a little jittery.
Scheppers is a former supplemental first-round pick by the Rangers, and he's shown better control in AAA than he ever has, walking just four batters in 29 innings with 27 strikeouts and two home runs allowed.
*Not a joke initially, but I think I'll keep it.
Update: Jeff Fletcher reports that Alexi Ogando, who was in the Rangers' rotation last season but has spent all of this season in the bullpen, will start in Holland's place this weekend against the Giants.
