The Tigers have placed rookie pitcher Drew Smyly on the 15-day DL with a right intercostal sprain.
The Detroit Tigers will be without rookie left-handed starter Drew Smyly for the near future at least, after the team announced he would be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right intercostal sprain. Jacob Turner will start for the Tigers Tuesday in Smyly's place, and Luis Marte will be recalled from Triple-A Toledo to replace him on the roster.
Smyly injured his left side during a July 7 start, according to MLive.com's Chris Iott, during which he also struck out a career-high 10 batters against the Royals. He said he was fine after the game, but after taking some time during the All-Star break, it was apparent to manager Jim Leyland that Smyly needed some more time to heal. He is 4-3 with a 4.42 ERA in 15 starts this season.
