Orioles Activate Nick Markakis From Disabled List

There are still three days before any major-league regular-season action resumes after the All-Star break, but the Baltimore Orioles wanted to make sure they were ready early. Brittany Ghiroli:

As expected, the Orioles reinstated outfielder Nick Markakis from the 15-day disabled list and optioned infielder Joe Mahoney to Triple-A Norfolk on Monday.

Markakis was placed on the DL for the first time in his career on June 1 (retroactive to May 30) with a right hamate bone fracture. He has hit .256/.333/.452 with eight home runs and 26 RBIs in 50 games this season.

Markakis, who will have missed about six weeks by the time he plays in his first game back on Friday, played in three games on rehab assignment at Double-A Bowie; he hit .300/.417/1.000 (3-for-10 with all the hits going for extra bases, a double and two home runs).

The Orioles have gone 16-21 with the usually durable (157 or more games played four straight years) Markakis on the shelf.

Nick Markakis Takes BP; Rehab Games Coming Soon

Baltimore Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis, who suffered a wrist injury on May 29 in a loss to the Blue Jays, had to have surgery on the hamate bone in his hand. At the time, it was stated he’d be out from three to four weeks.

Looks like that timetable has been extended, but just by a bit:

That’s good news for Markakis and for the team; the Orioles, who were in first place when he went down with this injury, have gone 13-16 since.

Of course, this doesn’t mean Markakis will be back in the lineup any time soon; there will be the usual rehab stint, and with just a week left before the All-Star break, it’s likely his return will be after the break ends.
