Just before Tuesday's non-waivers trade deadline, the Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired Miami Marlins first baseman Gaby Sánchez, sending outfielder Gorkys Hernández and a Competitive Balance Draft pick to the Marlins.

Sánchez entered this season with decent career numbers, including a .346 on-base percentage and .440 slugging percentage. But he got off to a terrible start, never got back on track, and finally was demoted to the minors in early July. The good news is that Sánchez has done well in his month-long stint in Class AAA. The bad news is that he'll turn 29 in just a few weeks, and probably has already enjoyed his best seasons. But Sánchez does give the Pirates another option at first base, where Casey McGehee has struggled for most of the year.

Gorkys Hernández is only 24, but seems to have stalled in AAA. He does have the potential to become a decent fourth or fifth outfielder. And considering that the Marlins seem to have given up on Sánchez, they're probably just happy to get something for him, with Hernández and that spare draft pick constituting something.
