The major leagues' stolen-base leader hurt his thumb on a stolen-base attempt Wednesday night.

The Dodgers' Dee Gordon is not a favorite of the sabermetrically inclined, because he's hitting just .229/.280/.282, with an OPS+ of 56. That's pretty bad.

But he does steal bases, which does create some value. And now the Dodgers are apparently going to be without that value for some time, after Gordon dislocated his thumb on a stolen-base attempt Wednesday night. Alex Angert and Ken Gurnick:

X-rays were negative for a fracture, and he had the thumb in a splint. Gordon accompanied the club after the game to Arizona, where he will have an MRI on Thursday to determine the full extent of the injury and a timetable for his return.

"I have no idea about a timetable yet," manager Don Mattingly said.

But a dislocation is bad enough, because it means ligaments were completely or partially torn, and it is the thumb on his throwing hand. Gordon said the swelling was significant. He's virtually certain to go on the disabled list.

Gordon is leading the major leagues with 30 steals in 38 attempts; his 78.9 percentage is above-average. If Gordon is out for any length of time, the Dodgers will probably look to the trade market for a replacement.
