The Boston Red Sox have had so many players sent to the disabled list, then activated, then sent back to the DL, that it’s hard to keep track.
So if it’s Thursday, this must be Dustin Pedroia Activation Day. Right? Right!
Red Sox today activated 2B Dustin Pedroia from 15-day DL & optioned 1B Mauro Gomez to Pawtucket.

Poor Mauro Gomez. He was recalled May 13, optioned May 20, recalled July 3, optioned July 14, and just recalled Wednesday when David Ortiz was placed on the disabled list. Now he’s optioned back to Pawtucket again. And he can’t even pile up frequent flyer miles; it’s only 45 miles down I-95 from Fenway Park to McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket. Gomez must know every leaf on that route by now.
But Red Sox fans will be happy their second baseman is back in the lineup; he’s batting third Thursday evening against the White Sox.

Dustin Pedroia injured his thumb in May, sitting for nearly a week instead of going on the disabled list. He came back in early June and played through the injury for the rest of the month.
After aggravating the injury on Wednesday and leaving the game, Pedroia is finally going on the DL:

Nick Punto will pick up a lot of the at-bats in Pedroia's absence, which is something of a drastic downgrade, as Punto is hitting .180/.295/.247 in 89 at-bats this year. But Pedroia's numbers are down this year -- .266/.326/.400 -- thanks to a Punto-esque June in which he hit .194/.269/.269. To use a baseball expression, Pedroia "hit like a guy with a screwed-up thumb."
This will be the first trip to the DL for Pedroia since he fouled a pitch off his foot in August, 2010, and missed the rest of the season.
