Dodgers shortstop Dee Gordon, who has impressed casual fans with his 30 stolen bases despite an OPS+ of 56, hurt his thumb on a slide into third base on a steal attempt Wednesday night.
This was not a good thing, and the worst-case scenario has come to pass. Jesse Sanchez:
Dodgers shortstop Dee Gordon will have surgery on a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb on Friday and will miss at least six weeks.
Gordon injured the thumb on a headfirst slide while stealing third base, his Major League-leading 30th steal of the year, in the eighth inning against the Reds on Wednesday night in Los Angeles. The Dodgers activated reliever Javy Guerra from the disabled list to take Gordon’s spot on the roster.
While Gordon is out, the Dodgers will mix-and-match at shortstop, with Elian Herrera, Jerry Hairston, Luis Cruz and Juan Uribe all expected to see time there; Herrera, Hairston, and Mark Ellis will take over Gordon’s leadoff duties.
