Ian Desmond, shortstop for the Washington Nationals, had been named to the National League All-Star team; it was to be his first All-Star appearance.
Then this happened:
Bourn was named to NL all-star team replacing Ian Desmond who has strained oblique
— David O'Brien (@ajcbraves) July 7, 2012
What's strange about this announcement is that Desmond is in the lineup for the Nationals Saturday afternoon at Nationals Park, in a game against the Colorado Rockies. And in that game, he has homered (his 16th; he leads all major-league shortstops in home runs) and singled. The oblique injury must not be all that serious.
Michael Bourn, who finished second in the National League All-Star final vote that concluded on Thursday, is having a fine season for the Braves, hitting .305/.360/.448 with seven home runs and 23 stolen bases.
