The Red Sox will be without Will Middlebrooks who broke his wrist when he was hit by a pitch Friday night.

Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks has been impressive in his rookie season, but Boston will be without him for the near future after he broke his wrist Friday night, according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe.

The injury occurred in the ninth inning of Boston's game against the Indians. Middlebrooks was hit on the wrist by a fastball from Cleveland's Esmil Rogers. He left the game and had an X-ray which indicated a fracture.

The loss of Middlebrooks will be a major blow for the Boston, offense which has already been without David Ortiz. Middlebrooks is hitting .288 this season with 15 home runs and 54 RBI. His emergence was a major reason the Red Sox decided to trade Kevin Youkalis to the Chicago White Sox.

It's still unknown how long the injury will keep Middlebrooks out of action. Boston will call up Danny Valencia to replace him on the roster.
