The Red Sox sent designated hitter Jarrod Saltalamacchia into the field late in their 14-1 win against Cleveland, meaning they lost their DH and relief pitcher Clayton Mortensen batted, possibly because they could. This is the first time a (non-position player) pitcher made a plate appearance in an American League game since 2010, when Tyson Ross batted in extra innings for the A's, and won the game too.
(Oops. Actually, it happened earlier this month: Aaron Loup batted for the Jays and also lost the game.)
