The Mets and Red Sox have completed a waiver trade.
Kelly Shoppach began his career with the Boston Red Sox as one of their better catching prospects; after career detours to Cleveland and Tampa Bay, he was reacquired by Boston this past off-season and has been having a decent year as backup to Jarrod Saltalamacchia, hitting .250/.327/.471 with five home runs in 48 games.
With Ryan Lavarnway now taking over the primary backup role, Shoppach was considered expendable, and expend him they did:

#Mets moves: Claim catcher Kelly Shoppach on a waiver claim from the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named later.
Mike Nickeas has been the Mets' primary backup to Josh Thole, and charitably, we can say he's having a rough season, hitting just .168/.241/.228 in 114 plate appearances. The Mets can use Shoppach's veteran presence, and with David Ortiz about to return from the DL, the Red Sox had no room for three catchers.
