The A's sent their Opening Day second baseman to the Minor Leagues.
Oakland Athletics second baseman Jemile Weeks has been having a miserable offensive season. In looking through his 2012 game logs, I tried to find a place where he'd been slumping, or some indication that he'd gotten worse. No luck -- he's been bad all year, hitting just .220/.305/.302, a .607 OPS that gives him a 71 OPS+.
That's why this news, from Jane Lee, isn't too surprising:
It appears Jemile Weeks has been optioned.
The move is being made for this reason:
Seth Smith has been activated from DL and is in starting lineup.

Stephen Drew, just acquired by the A's from the Diamondbacks, is also in the starting lineup for Oakland for tonight's contest against the Twins, batting second. That means the A's will have turned over their entire starting Opening Day infield (Weeks, Cliff Pennington, Brandon Allen and Eric Sogard).
And yet, the A's continue to to stay in the thick of the wild-card race, just half a game behind the Orioles.
