Chicago Cubs right-hander Matt Garza was supposed to be a hot commodity at the trade deadline, but he left his July 21 start against the Cardinals with a sore arm. The initial diagnosis was a triceps injury, and that was later amended to a stress reaction in his right elbow. Garza was hopeful he'd be back, but the team shut him down for the season.
Sveum confirms Matt Garza done for the season.

If the Cubs were 18 games back from a playoff spot, maybe they'd consider rushing Garza back, but at 19 games, forget it. Garza was having something of an up-and-down season, posting another sterling strikeout-to-walk ratio, but allowing more home runs in 103 innings than he did in 198 innings last season.
Garza finishes the 2012 season with a 3.91 ERA. He'll likely still be the subject of all sorts of trade rumors this off-season.
