According to Marc Topkin (via TampaBay.com), Major League Baseball has suspended three Tampa Bay Rays minor leaguers for using methamphetamine.

All three players -- second baseman Ryan Brett, right-handed pitcher Charles Cononie, and left-handed pitcher Justin Woodall -- have most recently played for the Rays' Bowling Green affiliate in the Class-A Midwest League. Brett, a third-round draft pick two years ago, was regarded as the best prospect among the three. Before this season, Baseball America ranked him as the Rays' No.14 prospect.

All three tested players tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine, and have been suspended for 50 games. Considering the minor-league season is nearly over, their suspensions will carry over into next May. And it's not yet know if they will face further consequences from the Rays. Brett remains a prospect, though his stock has fallen some this season. The other two, relief pitchers in their mid-20s, were already marginal at best, and might simply be released.
