Cole Hamels is ill. Replacing him for Wednesday's game is a top prospect who's done very well in the minor leagues in 2012.
Don't panic, Phillies fans. The headline might alarm you, but lefthander Cole Hamels isn't injured. He will, however, miss his Wednesday start due to a gastrointestinal bug:
Tyler Cloyd, named the International League's best pitcher a day ago, will make his major-league debut Wednesday only because of an illness to Cole Hamels.
The Phillies announced Hamels will not start as scheduled because of a gastrointestinal illness. Replacing him is Cloyd, who was slated to pitch at triple-A Lehigh Valley. Instead, he will face the New York Mets.
Cloyd, who is in his fifth year in the Phillies organization, has had a breakout season with both Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He's gone 12-1 with a 2.35 ERA and 1.007 WHIP in Triple-A, after posting a 1.80 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in four starts in Double-A. It should, at the very least, get Phillies fans excited for the future in a dismal season.
