Athletics rookie starter A.J. Griffin left Saturday's game with tightness in his shoulder.
A day after watching Yoenis Cespedes leave a game early due to a right wrist sprain, the Oakland Athletics had to make another mid-game injury replacement Saturday when starting pitcher A.J. Griffin left Saturday's game with tightness in his right shoulder.
After retiring the first two batters in the second inning, Griffin worked a 1-1 count to Moises Sierra. Before he could throw another pitch, Athletics manager Bob Melvin and trainer Nick Paparesta were on the mound and Griffin was done for the day.
The timing could not be worse for the Athletics, who had to dip into their bullpen just 1-2/3 into the game after playing a 15-inning game Friday night. The injury could be a major blow to Oakland as the 24-year-old Griffin has been a major part of the Athletics rise to second place in the AL West.
In seven starts this season, Griffin has a 2.51 ERA and 0.98 WHIP. He has struck out 35 batters in 43 innings pitched.
