The Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians 5-3 to remain one game back of the White Sox in the A.L. Central. The win was their fourth in a row.

The Tigers struck early with two runs in the first off of Justin Masterson, aided by a Lonnie Chisenhall error. Alex Avila went 3-4 with two RBI and Miguel Cabrera connected for his 37th home run in the seventh inning.

The Indians were without a hit against Anibal Sanchez until Carlos Santana tripled with two outs in the 7th. After a Russ Canzler double and a Chisenhall single, which cut the lead to 5-2, Phil Coke came in and ended the threat.

Cleveland drew a little bit closer in the 8th, when Asdrubal Cabrera singled off of Joaquin Benoit to score Cord Phelps, but Benoit would get Santana to ground to first to end the inning.

Jose Valverde threw a perfect ninth inning to close out the game and pick up his 31st save.

The Tigers are now 77-67 and will send Rick Porcello to the mound tomorrow against Ubaldo Jimenez.
