Tuesday, Baseball America announced that Royals prospect Wil Myers is that publication's Minor League Player of the Year. This bodes well for Myers' future, as the last five winners of the award were Mike Trout, Jeremy Hellickson, Jason Heyward, Matt Wieters, and Jay Bruce.

Other top candidates for this year's award were Rangers shortstop Jurickson Profar -- more about him here -- and Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras. Both piled up big numbers in Class AA this season, while Myers opened the season at that that level but later thrived after a promotion to Triple-A Omaha. Overall, he batted .313/.387/.600, with 37 home runs and 109 RBI. If there's a real weakness in Myers' game, it's his control of the strike zone, as he struck out 140 times this season, with only 61 walks.

Despite his brilliant performance this season, Myers apparently will not be joining the Royals' big-league roster this month, because he's not yet on the Royals' 40-man roster, and adding him would expose another young player to this winter's Rule 5 Draft. Exactly the same thing happened two years ago with Mike Moustakas, now the Royals' every-day third baseman.
