I'm talking, of course, about Top 100 Right Now, the MLB Network show that purports to tell us who the best players in baseball are, well, Right Now. I know I've complained about this before, but, um ...
The players in question are Adam Jones and—wait for it—Ben Zobrist. Now, maybe you think WAR overrates Zobrist's defense. Fine. Zobrist has been the better hitter of the two, but never mind. Maybe you think Jones, who's four years younger than Zobrist, has the brighter future, and thus deserves to place higher on the list. I could certainly be convinced of that.
But Jones isn't just a few places higher than Zobrist. He's at least seventy-eight places higher. Zobrist is behind Jim Johnson and Jason Motte and Ryan Howard and A.J. Pierzynski, and at least forty other players who have never been as good as him, and won't be as good this season.
I guess I expected more from the network that gave us The Kevin Millar Ha-Ha Comedy Hour.
