Just to recap these last three days:
Tuesday: Harold Reynolds says Phil Coke will be the Tigers' closer all season.
Wednesday: Phil Coke blows save, Tigers lose.
Thursday: Tigers sign free agent José Valverde.
Also Thursday? Twitter throws big party, takes the rest of the week off.
Hey, maybe the Tigers wanted Valverde in the organization all along, and were just waiting for his price to come down; he probably didn't think -- you know, considering he saved 35 games last season for a division-winning team -- that he'd still be looking for work on Opening Day. On the other hand, you have to wonder why the Tigers went through all winter and spring without a real plan for the late innings, relief-wise.
Or maybe the plan all along was just to see how things went in April. Maybe that's the luxury of playing in a division you're supposed to win by 10 games.
