Ha ha, oh, sorry, man. But Chase Utley was just playin' all out and goin' for it. Even though you can't touch the fielder at first, second, or third, you can sure touch him at home. And now Dioner Navarro might miss a long, long time. Especially if you're playin' hard. Utley did nothing wrong according to the rules. He did everything right, really. It wasn't a vicious play. Just a stupid rule.
Which is the problem. There's a rule in college baseball that makes it illegal to force the ball out of the catcher's mitt. There's a rule to make it illegal to block the plate. It's a complicated system, alright. Not sure if MLB could handle the transition.
Here's the aesthetic argument against home-plate collisions. Here's an ex-catcher complaining about them. Here's a video of home-plate collisions set to ... Disturbed? Trapt? Whatever it is, it let's you know who's on the side of home-plate collisions. The guy who thinks that's a good song.
Home-plate collisions are still the worst. But until there's a broken neck, nothing will change. Seems silly until you realize it's completely messed up.
